程安排了一場演講,由梁定澎老師所邀請的一位任教於 Management
Information System School of Business
Administration, Oakland University 的學者,Dr. Balaji
Rajagopalan,來
系上演講。Professor Rajagopalan
是 印尼的印度人,雖然演講過程有著印度口音,仍然說了一口流利的英文。Professor
Rajagopalan於1999年
從School of Business
Administration, University
of Memphis畢
業(主修是Management
Information Systems,畢業論文研究主題是On
Modeling the Diffusion
of Information Technology Innovations),因此算是位年紀很輕的副教授學者。目前的敎
學領域是IT Project Management, Managing
Global Sourcing of IT以及IT Enabled
Services.
Professor Rajagopalan的演講共分成兩部份,第一部份是最近研究論文的分享,題目是:Research
Issues in Open Source Software Development and Adoption,一共有三篇尚在進行的研究論文(working
paper),由於時間的限制,Professor Rajagopalan只介紹第一、二篇論文。第二部份則是讓我們自由發問。
在第一部份分享研究時,Professor
Rajagopalan將第一篇論文的研究大綱詳細的介紹一遍,諸如Examples of Open Products,
Evolution of Open Source, Research opportunities in open source
research,
Research issues in OSS development and adoption, Ongoing research
projects以及Future research.該
研究的研究主題主要是探討Open Source的發展(development)與採用(adoption)的情形。第二篇論文則就第一篇論文延伸其研究提出研究
問題(Research Questions)、概念性研
究模式(Conceptual
Model)、資料(Data)的
取得、變數(Variables)的定義、分析(Analysis)以及研究發現(Research Findings),研究中引用了Download Takeoff的概念以做為衡量Open Source的創新(innovativeness)與
發展的努力(development effort)影響
市場接受採用(market success)的指標。
第二部份讓我們自由發問時,Professor
Rajagopalan耐心地跟我們分享他在此研究的一些心得,透過賴老師以及博二學長、姊的提問,Professor
Rajagopalan也一一的解答了我們的一些疑惑,例如賴老師所提本研究的研究方式(Methodlolgy)為何?本
研究的標的只探討Open
Source而沒有涵蓋Shareware等
問題讓我們更了解Professor Rajagopalan的研究理念。當然也對Open
Source發展的演進與市場的採用情形得到了許多研究發現。

Rajagopalan]
My current
research interests include virtual communities, open source
software, global sourcing of IT & IT enabled services, and the
diffusion of
information technology innovations. I also have a strong interest to
carryout
applied research projects for organizations. I have extensive
experience
working with several fortune 500 companies on research projects,
consulting or
advisory services. As part of my research/consulting activities, I have
interacted with several firms including Daimler Chrysler, EDS,
Covansys,
Thomson-Gale, Kelly Services, Handleman, Cap-Gemini, PWC, EMC, GM,
Ford, St.
Joseph Mercy, Beaumont Hospitals, & ITC Infotech. I have taught
in
executive education programs and currently serve as the director of an
Executive MBA program with a focus on the health care industry. My
publications
have appeared in several journals including Information Systems
Research, Communications
of the ACM, IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics, Decision
Support
Systems and over 25 conference proceedings. I have also been the
recipient of a
collaborative research grant of $500,000 from the National Science
Foundation.
